Skills

Set Up:

  • Mark out an area to play
  • Designate one or two ‘electric piggies’

Description:

  • Players spread out in the area
  • Depending on numbers, use one or two medium-large balls that have to be thrown around between children
  • You can only hold a ball for 3 seconds!
  • An electric piggy can try and catch the ball
  • They can also tag you if you have the ball in your hands
  • If an electric piggy catches the ball or tags you while you have the ball, you switch over and the person who threw the ball or got tagged becomes the new electric piggy

Variations:

  • Rotate the electric piggy frequently
  • Coach is the electric piggy
  • Make the ball smaller (if proficient/older children)
  • Lightning storm! The electric piggy can tag anyone at any time, as well as take the ball!

Teaching Points:

Catching:

  • Watch the ball
  • Soft fingers, big hands
  • Thumbs together and up (butterfly hands) for balls above waist and fingers pointing down (wriggly worms) for balls below waist
  • Reach out for the ball and catch with two hands

Dodging:

  • Bend, push & turn
  • Look straight ahead
  • Use only one step to change direction

Running:

  • Hip to lip – arms are bent and travel from a child’s hip to their lip
  • Hands closed lightly
  • Eyes up
  • High knees
  • Land on the ball of the foot
