Skills

Set Up:

Set up four small obstacle courses:

  1. Starting cone, 6 hoops in a row, agility ladder, balance beam, cricket tee, ball and bat at end with pop-up soccer goal 10 metres in front of cricket tee
  2. Starting cone, 6 mini hurdles spread out over 10 metres, 6 balance pods, cricket tee, ball and bat at end with 3 witches hats 10 metres in front
  3. Starting cone then 6 agility poles in a line, then 3 hoops spread out and a bucket of tennis balls, 3 cricket tees and a bat at end
  4. Starting cone, balance beam, 3 standing up hoops, 2 small hurdles, cricket tee, ball and bat at end with pop up soccer goal 10 metres in front

Children line up behind a starting cone with even numbers at each cone

Note: The cricket tees and cricket bats can be easily changed to teeball tees and teeball bats.

Description:

Child first in line at each of the four obstacle course completes the course and then moves onto the next course. Once first child is at cricket tee, next child starts.

Obstacle courses:

  1. Jump from hoop to hoop, then short, fast steps through agility ladder, balance along balance beam and then hit ball off cricket tee aiming at soccer goal. Collect ball and place back on tee
  2. Jump over hurdles, step on balance pods without touching the ground, then hit ball off cricket tee aiming for the witches hats. Collect ball and place back on tee
  3. Run in and out of the agility poles, jump from hoop to hoop then hit 3 balls off the cricket tees. Replace balls with ones from the bucket for the next batter
  4. Balance along beam, climb through hoops, jump over hurdles and then hit ball off tee aiming for soccer goal. Collect ball and place back on tee.

Variations:

  • Depending on numbers change the number of courses or the number of children in each group
  • Give children in line a task to do e.g. stand on one leg, throw a beanbag in air and catch, balance beanbag on head
  • Add a theme to create interest e.g. going through a jungle or in the circus
  • Add different skill combinations to obstacle course e.g. hopping, skipping, dodging
  • Be creative with your obstacle course, the above is just one idea, let the children design the course

Teaching Points:

Striking

  • Hands together
  • Ready: stand side on to the ball (use markers to assist)
  • Eyes on the ball
  • Step & Swing – step with the front foot towards the target
