Skills

Set Up:

  • Mark 2 vertical lines with cones or use lines already marked on a court ~ 2m apart, side-by-side
  • Place a line of witches hats 15 metres away from each line of cones in opposite directions
  • Children start standing next to a cone, standing side-by side with a partner
  • There should be two long vertical lines of children with each line two metres away from the other line

Description:

Coach names one line as ‘rats’ and the other line as ‘rabbits’.

When coach shouts ‘rats’, the rats run away from the rabbits to witches hats and rabbits chase them.

Reset back in line.

Children can keep count of the number of times they catch their opponent.

Variations:

  • Coach can call out other names beginning with ‘r’ to challenge reactions
  • Swap partners
  • Start lying on the ground facing each other
  • Change the form of locomotion to skipping or hopping

Teaching Points:

  • Ensure children have eyes up and look where they are running to
  • Take short, quick steps
  • High knees
  • Hands closed lightly, like holding a small bird
