Skills

Set Up:

  • Children are in partners each with a sticky grip on their non-preferred hand
  • One child starts with the ball

Description:

Revise throwing technique, and demonstrate appropriate ways to catch the balls using the sticky grips.

  • Try in partners
  • Try with the coach throwing
  • Try catching on the run
  • See how many catches in a row

Variations:

  • Start with underarm throws to make it easier
  • Can play other throwing and catching games such as Shrink and Grow, Race the Ball and Golden Child with Sticky Catches

Teaching Points:

Catching

  • Watch the ball
  • Soft fingers
  • Thumbs together and up (butterfly hands) for balls above waist and fingers pointing down (wriggly worms) for balls below waist
  • Reach out for the ball and catch with the sticky grip

Throwing

  • Ready: stand side-on
  • Aim: make a muscle man (throwing arm bent up above shoulder), point non-throwing arm at target
  • Fire: step forward with opposite foot and throw
