1. Creating an assessment
Read the instructions below or watch the how to video >
First, you need to make sure you have students in your class. See 'Adding and Managing Students' for information on how to add students.
Then you need to create your assessment:
IMPORTANT: Make sure all the students that you want to assess are added to the one assessment (even if you are conducting assessments on different days). If you have multiple assessments, your insights and reports will be affected. If you have new students in your class, see below for instructions on how to add them to your assessment.
- Click on the 'Dashboard' button in the top right-hand side of the page (or the 'Dashboard' button next to your class if you teach multiple classes)
- Click on the subheading ‘Assessments’ (it’s between 'Overview' and 'Programs')
- Click the ‘Add assessment’ button
- Give your assessment a name E.g. Year 2C, Term 3, and select a date for when you plan to run the assessment
- Select which challenges you would like to administer. **Important: If you would like all the challenges assessed to be on the one report you must select all the challenges in the one assessment. Multiple assessments cannot be combined into one report**
- Select which students you are planning to assess (ideally select them all)
- Then click ‘Save’ if you are starting the assessment at another time or ‘Save & Run’ if you want to get started straight away.
2. Running an assessment online
Read the instructions below or watch the how to video >
Before beginning, click on the “i” icon in the blue assessments bar at the top of the assessment dashboard. This takes you through each of the assessments and how to run them in detail.
IMPORTANT: Take the time to read the information about the assessments and watch the videos. We need all assessments to be done as similarly as possible with the same equipment and instructions. All data you enter is live data and will be used to calculate the percentile ranks of your students and students around Australia.
Now you are ready to assess!
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created
- Select 'Run trials'
- Select the student you would like to start with and click on the arrow next to their name to reveal all the assessment challenges you have selected
- Select the challenge you would like to begin with E.g. Balance
- Click 'Go', run the challenge, and enter the result
- If you would like to enter observations at the same time click on ‘Observations’ to see the list. Tick the ones that are relevant
- You can also add any comments about the challenge by clicking on the blue 'Comments' box. E.g. Sam was distracted during the balance challenge
- Click ‘Save trial’, and you will automatically be taken back to your class list of students.
You can now move on to a different skill challenge with the same student or move to a new student by clicking on the arrow next to the student's name that you would like to assess.
NOTE: If you accidentally select the wrong student, you can navigate back to the class list by clicking the 'x' in the black box in the top right-hand corner.
I've completed some of the assessment challenges with my students. Why does it still say '0 students assessed'?
The program only recognises when the student has completed all of the assessment challenges you have selected. Once a student has completed all of your selected challenges, it will mark them as complete.
3. Running an assessment offline
Read the instructions below watch the how to video >
If you are having issues with your device and/or internet, you can still input all of your assessment results into your device, and they will be synced when you have internet access again.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created while you are connected to the internet
- Select 'Run trials' and ensure that you are on the page containing your student list.
- Once your device is on this page, it does not matter if you have an internet connection - all your results will be saved. A blue box will appear that says 'Data sync in progress' along with the number of items that remain to be synced. E.g. If you entered 20 students' data, it will say 20 items remaining.
- When your device returns to good internet service, all the data will automatically be synced, or you can press the refresh button in your browser and a message will pop up that says 'Data upload in progress. Hang tight, this shouldn't take long! Speed may vary depending on your connection.'
- Remain on the screen and wait for synchronisation to complete.
4. How to enter bulk assessment data
Read the instructions below or watch the how to video >
This method is ideal if you prefer collecting assessment data on paper and inputting it later.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created
- Select 'Bulk entry'
- Click the arrow next to the student to begin entering data.
- Click in each box for each skill to enter the data, or use the Tab key to navigate to the next trial or assessment challenge. If you don’t have data for certain students or skills, just leave it blank.
Note: when entering data for the skill of Balance: two trials on each leg up to a maximum of 40 seconds are required when assessing balance. If you reach 40 seconds on the first trial for the right leg, you do not need to do a second trial on the right leg. The same applies to the left leg. As you enter the data for your first balance trials, the second trial on each leg is greyed out, however, you can still enter data in these boxes while greyed out and as you enter the data for the first trials they will change from greyed out to white.
- Data is saved automatically once entered
- Click the observations box (optional) to complete the observations checklist for each trial
- Use the blue comments box to include additional remarks for each skill
- Remain on the bulk entry screen after entering all data for a class and wait for synchronisation to complete before moving to the next class.
Important - As you enter the data, the system needs to sync and you will see a blue box pop up as this happens. You can continue entering the data for this class’s assessment, as it is all still saved and will continue syncing as you enter the data. If you are entering the data at a fast pace, you may need to wait a few minutes after entering one class before moving on to the next class to allow the data to sync successfully. Please do not navigate away from the bulk entry page until the data is synced.
5. Suggestions for running the assessment in a school setting on your own
- Stations teaching structure
- Set up 4 - 6 simple stations
- Position yourself at a station where you can individually assess the students
- Choose to assess ONE skill per session E.g. Jump
- 5 minutes per station - whistle to change stations. Can do two rotations if needed
- Use our Station Cards for inspiration. You can find them in our Resource Library
- Filming on a tablet or phone, and then inputting the data later. Works particularly well for Bounce and Catch.
- Only conduct 1 - 2 assessments per term
6. Suggestions for running the assessment in a school setting with support
- Use an Education Assistant - they take students out of class one by one and run the assessment challenges
- Work with another class - one teacher takes the children for the activities, while the other assesses
- Use TAFE/SEDA/work experience/older students (Year 6+)/parents to help run the assessment. Train them up and ensure they are adhering to the protocols
- Admin support - providing a relief teacher so you can conduct assessments
7. Adding more students to an assessment
- Firstly, you must make sure the student has been added to your class. See 'Adding and Managing Students' for instructions
- Go into your 'Dashboard'
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created
- Select 'Modify'
- Keep selecting 'Next' until you get to 'Students'. The new student should show up on your list. You need to tick their name to add them to the assessment
- Click 'Save' or 'Save and Run'.
8. Exporting assessment data
There are two ways you can export assessment data:
- If you are a 'Manager' for your school:
- In the ⚙ ‘cog’ (management) section click on ‘Results’
- Select the classroom you would like to export the data from. You can select multiple classrooms by holding down the ‘Shift’ key
- Alternatively, you can choose to filter by the assessment date
- Click ‘Filter’
- Click ‘Download CSV’. Your data will be exported into an Excel spreadsheet
- If you are not a 'Manager for your school:
- Click on the 'Dashboard' button in the top right-hand side of the page (or the 'Dashboard' button next to your class if you teach multiple classes)
- Click on the subheading ‘Assessments’ (it’s between 'Overview' and 'Programs')
- Select the assessment/s you would like to export. You can select all the assessments by ticking the blue box at the top of the column.
- Click 'Export CSV'. Your data will be exported into an Excel spreadsheet
9. What skills should I assess and when?
KIDDO suggests the following assessment schedule. This is based on the skills being taught, managing the assessment load, the year group of the students, and capturing skill development. This is just a suggestion and can be modified for your school. You might only want to assess once or twice a year.
Term 1 | Term 2 | Term 3 | Term 4 | |
Kindergarten/Pre-school | No assessment | Balance, Jump | Run, Bounce & Catch | Kick |
Foundation | Balance, Run, Jump, Bounce & Catch | Run, Kick | Jump, Bounce & Catch | Balance |
Year 1 | All skills | Jump, Kick | Bounce & Catch, Balance | Kick |
Year 2 | Balance | Kick, Run | Jump, Bounce & Catch | All skills |
Year 3-6* | *See note on assessment validation below. |
*The KIDDO FMS assessment is only validated for use until the end of Year 2. The Balance and Bounce and Catch assessments should not be used past Year 2 as there is a limit to the score that can be achieved and these assessments are no longer able to differentiate effectively between different levels of proficiency. The Run, Jump, and Kick assessments can continue to be used if you wish to keep tracking progress as students will continue to show improvement with ongoing opportunities plus teaching and learning. From Years 3-6, it is important to continue providing the opportunity for students to use skills in contexts such as sports and invasion games.
10. Changing the assessment date
You can assess whenever you like simply by clicking on the ‘Assess Now’ button which is located on your Overview page within the class Dashboard.
When you create a program, you can input an assessment date of your choosing.
11. Can you delete an assessment?
You can only delete an assessment if it doesn't contain any results.
To delete it, click on the three dots on the right side of the assessment and click 'Delete'.
Once there are results entered it cannot be deleted, however, you can delete or edit individual results if you wish. To delete or edit individual results, the easiest way is to click on the three dots to the right of the assessment and select 'Bulk entry'. Go to the selected student, click on the arrow to the right of their name, and either delete or edit the result entered. Your change will be saved automatically.
12. What do I do if a student refuses to complete an assessment challenge?
If a student refuses to complete an assessment challenge, please leave their results blank and make a note in the ‘Comments’ section for that particular challenge. If you mark them as ‘0’, the percentile rankings will be affected.
