1. Creating a CAMSA assessment
First, make sure you have students in your class. See 'Adding and Managing Students' for information on how to add students.
Then you need to create your assessment:
IMPORTANT: Check to make sure all the students you are assessing are added to the one assessment (even if you are conducting assessments on different days). If you create multiple assessments, your insights and reports will be affected. If you have new students in your class, see 'Adding more students to an assessment' below for instructions on how to add them to your assessment.
- Click on the 'Dashboard' button in the top right-hand side of the page (or the 'Dashboard' button next to your class if you teach multiple classes)
- Click on the subheading ‘Assessments’ (it’s between 'Overview' and 'Programs')
- Choose 'Add CAMSA'
- Give your assessment a name, e.g., Year 5B, Term 1, and select a date for when you plan to administer the assessment. If you are running the assessment over multiple dates, try to choose a date that is somewhere in the middle
- Select which students you are planning to assess (ideally, select them all)
- Then click ‘Save’ if you are starting the assessment at another time or ‘Save and Run’ if you want to get started straight away
2. Running a CAMSA assessment online
Before beginning, click on the 'Instructions' box (below the blue assessments bar at the top of the assessment dashboard). You can find detailed instructions for how to administer the CAMSA Assessment.
IMPORTANT: Take the time to read the information about CAMSA and watch the video. We need all assessments to be conducted as similarly as possible, with the same equipment, set-up, and instructions. All data you enter is live data and will be used to create their CAMSA report.
Now you are ready to assess! Please see below for suggestions to implement CAMSA on your own or with support from others.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created
- Select 'Run trials'
- Select the student you would like to start with and click on the arrow next to their name to reveal Trial 1 and Trial 2
- Click 'Go' for Trial 1
- You must press 'Start' when they begin the test, and 'Stop' when they finish
- As they complete each skill, move the slider to the right to award points for their performance
- Once complete, click ‘Save trial’, and you will automatically be taken back to your class list of students
- You can now move on to Trial 2 with the same student or move to a new student by clicking on the arrow next to the student's name you would like to assess
- Once both trials have been completed, the students will have a green dot next to their name
- A blue box will appear at the bottom, which says 'Data Sync in Progress. Please remain on this page until all data has been synced. Do not navigate away from the page until the data has been saved
NOTE: If you accidentally select the wrong student, you can navigate back to the class list by clicking the 'x' in the black box in the top right-hand corner.
3. Running a CAMSA assessment offline
If you are having issues with your device and/or internet, you can still input all of your assessment results into your device, and they will be synced when you return to internet access.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created while you are connected to the internet
- Select 'Run trials' and ensure that you are on the page containing your student list
- Once your device is on this page, it does not matter if you have an internet connection - all your results will be saved. A blue box will appear saying 'Data sync in progress' along with the number of items that remain to be synced. e.g., If you entered 20 students' data, it will say 20 items remaining
- When your device reconnects to the internet, all the data will automatically be synced, or you can press the refresh button in your browser, and a message will pop up that says 'Data upload in progress. Hang tight, this shouldn't take long! Speed may vary depending on your connection.'
- Remain on the screen and wait for synchronisation to complete
4. How to enter bulk assessment data
If you prefer to film your students participating in the CAMSA and then go back later to complete the timing and scoring, you simply enter the data the same way as if you were inputting it live (see 'Running a CAMSA Assessment Online' above). This method is ideal if you are administering the CAMSA on your own.
5. Suggestions for running the CAMSA assessment in a school setting on your own
- Before you begin the CAMSA assessment, it's important to show two demonstrations to the students. It is recommended that you demonstrate to the whole class at once
- In the first demonstration, move slowly through the entire course, performing each skill correctly and explaining it as you go
- For the second demonstration, perform the course at full speed, whilst still maintaining accuracy in your skills
- All students must receive two practice trials. You can either:
- Run each student through both practice trials as a class, or
- Run each student through one practice trial as a class, and then they complete their second practice trial just before they complete their first timed trial
When only one teacher is available:
- They manage the timer and provide the verbal cues to the students
- Record the session on video so you can score the skills afterwards
- A student in the class can perform the throwing and ball placement roles
- Use a station teaching structure
- Set up 4 - 6 simple stations
- Position yourself at the CAMSA station
- 5 minutes per station (or however long it takes you to get through two timed trials per student in your group) - whistle to change stations.
- Use our Station Cards for inspiration. You can find them in our Resource Library
6. Suggestions for running the CAMSA assessment in a school setting with support
- Before you begin the CAMSA assessment, it's important to show two demonstrations to the students. It is recommended that you demonstrate to the whole class at once

When two teachers are available (or a teacher and a teacher aide, parent, or helper):
- The teacher manages the timer and the skill observations
- The teacher aide/parent/helper is responsible for providing the verbal cues and throwing and placing the balls
When three people are available:
- The teacher manages the timer and the skill observations
- One helper is responsible for providing the verbal cues
- One helper is responsible for the ball throwing and ball placement
You are best placed to consider who is most appropriate to fill these roles, but consider teachers, assistants, parents, TAFE/SEDA/Work Experience students, and older students (Year 6+)
- Still use a station teaching structure
- Set up 4 - 6 simple stations
- Position yourself at the CAMSA station
- 5 minutes per station (or however long it takes you to get through two timed trials per student in your group) - whistle to change stations.

7. Adding more students to an assessment
- Firstly, you must ensure the student has been added to your class. See 'Adding and Managing Students' for instructions
- Go into your 'Dashboard'
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created
- Select 'Modify'
- Keep selecting 'Next' until you get to 'Students'. The new student should show up on your list. You need to tick their name to add them to the assessment
- Click 'Save' or 'Save and Run'
8. Exporting CAMSA assessment data
You must be a manager for your school to export assessment data:
- In the ⚙ ‘cog’ (management) section, click on ‘CAMSA Results’
- Select the classroom you would like to export the data from. You can select multiple classrooms by holding down the ‘Shift’ key
- Alternatively, you can choose to filter by the assessment date
- Click ‘Filter’
- Click ‘Download CSV’. Your data will be exported into an Excel spreadsheet
9. When should I assess using the CAMSA?
If you are following the KIDDO programs, we have programmed the CAMSA Assessment into Week 4 of Term 1 for Years 3 - 6. It is recommended that you reassess in Term 4 if possible.
Ultimately, you can assess using the CAMSA whenever it is suitable for your school.
10. Changing the assessment date
- Click on the 'Dashboard' button in the top right-hand side of the page (or the 'Dashboard' button next to your class if you teach multiple classes)
- Click on the subheading ‘Assessments’ (it’s between 'Overview' and 'Programs')
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment you created
- Select 'Modify'
- Change the date of the assessment
- Click 'Next' until you reach the final page
- Click 'Save' or Save and run'
When you create a program, you can input an assessment date of your choosing.
11. Can you delete an assessment?
You can only delete an assessment if it doesn't contain any results.
To delete, click on the three dots on the right side of the assessment and click 'Delete'.
Once results have been entered, the assessment cannot be deleted, however, you can delete or edit individual results if you wish. To delete or edit individual results, the easiest way is to:
- Click on the three dots to the right of the assessment and select 'Run trials'
- Go to the student you want to edit and click on the arrow to the right of their name
- Click 'Go' on the trial you wish to edit
- You can reset the time, enter the time manually, and alter the skill observations
- Click 'Save trial' to save your observations
12. What do I do if a student refuses to complete the CAMSA?
If a student refuses to complete the CAMSA, please leave their results blank and make a note in the ‘Comments’ section. If you mark them as ‘0’, the category rankings will be affected.
