Crowded Hands

Boy standing up and holding ball with encouragement from educator

Oopsy, you’ve got too many toys and not enough hands! This simple activity is a great way to develop balance skills in young children.

Set up

This activity is perfect for whilst toddlers and babies are exploring their walking or standing.

How to play
Step 1:
  • Whilst baby is standing up or walking, hand them a soft toy to hold
Step 2:
  • Encourage baby to not use their hands to hold onto furniture, and instead hold onto the toy
Step 3:
  • See if baby can take any steps without assistance whilst holding the toy
Variations
Make it easier
  • Use a small, soft toy that is easy to hold
  • Only use one toy, so the child can still use one hand to hold onto furniture
  • Walk behind baby, holding them by their clothing to help them feel supported
Make it harder
  • Use a larger toy so that the child can’t hold onto anything
  • Encourage stepping
  • Once baby has confidence in walking, try getting them to carry objects between places
